He began writing the story down in the early 2000’s, but it did not really come to life until he developed his home music ‘laboratory’ and started creating the music and text at the same time. Thus books one and two of TOC came about simultaneously as both graphically illustrated pages and effulgent audio albums filled with cinematic epic symphonic music.

Can you tell us what your book, Ring of Rosin, is about?

Ring of Rosin is the second book in the Dynamis Novels and continues the story of young King Rugal.

From an ancient Tolan legend:

Many, many years ago, a wondrous bird flew into the mountains of Tolan. In its claws, it bore a giant stone, a stone of fire. The bird dropped the stone somewhere in the mountains, where it shattered. The one who finds its fragments shall have power beyond belief.

The Ring of Rosin has unexpectedly disappeared. Join King Rugal on his quest to recover the ring symbolizing his right to rule, forged from the stone of fire. A mysterious companion joins the young monarch on a perilous journey. Rugal’s shadowy ally leads him to the nomadic Kargoliths, who are locked in an ongoing dispute with the neighboring kingdom of Tolan. As destinies intertwine amidst the clashing cultures, the fates of Elayas, Tolan, and the Kargoliths hang in the balance.

Will the Ring of Rosin’s power on the Day of Questioning help Rugal defeat the foreign threat to Elayas, or will it be used to destroy him?

Can you tell us a little about your main character and supporting characters?

Rugal is the main character of Ring of Rosin and the reigning king of Elayas. Rugal has the ability (the supernatural power called dynamis) to change into more than one animal form. He is the son of Jackal and Mura and he is also betrothed to Lissa, the daughter of Ethiod Stargazer. Tonar is an artist residing in Cargoa and he is Rugal’s closest friend.  Johan of Sharvindar is a mysterious emissary of King Handerbin of Tolan. Hamideh, King Handerbin’s son, is next in line to become king of Tolan. Rugal, Tonar, and Johan embark on a journey together to regain the Ring of Rosin.

Your book is set in several neighboring countries. Can you tell us why you chose this location in particular?

Ring of Rosin is set in the kingdom of Elayas, the kingdom of Tolan, and the unsettled territory in-between the two kingdoms, covering a variety of geographical regions. I didn’t choose the locations – I followed the story as it unfolded.

How long did it take you to write your book?

The first draft of the first book in the Dynamis Novels was written in 1986. Last year I took the draft from so long ago, and worked it into what became the final manuscript of Sword of Fate. Interestingly, I had also written the first three chapter of Ring of Rosin back then. While it has evolved into a very different book from what I envisioned so long ago, the inspiration from those first three chapters is intact and drives the plot line. Once I started work on Ring of Rosin, it moved rapidly and I completed the final version six months after I returned to those three chapters. Ring of Rosin officially launched on September 2, 2024.

What has been the most pivotal point of your writing life?

I am not sure if I can pinpoint a pivotal point in my writing life, but rather, being faithful to my calling to write, even when seasons of life caused long interruptions. I have been blessed with many exciting moments. For those familiar with Kirkus reviews – Getting a positive review and recommendation to “Get It” for my science fiction novel, Alien Neighbors, from Kirkus was an important milestone for me. Most recently, our local Barnes & Noble is carrying Sword of Fate (Book 1 of the Dynamis Novels) and Ring of Rosin (Book 2 of the Dynamis Novels) and their invitation to do an in-store author signing event has been very affirming - truly a dream come true.

What kind of advice would you give to up-and-coming authors?

My advice to up-and-coming authors is simple. Keep writing. You will need to spend an inordinate amount of time on administrative stuff, marketing, and researching. It is easy to let those things take over. Make sure you are still making writing a priority.

Nancy Golden's latest book is Ring of Rosin

Character Q&A: Alexei Sokolovl of Jörg H. Trauboth's The Death of the Kremlin Czar #characterinterview

Today's guest is Alexei Sokolovl from inside the pages of THE DEATH OF THE KREMLIN CZAR by Jorg H. Trauboth.  It is a pleasure to have him with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?

My name's Alexei Sokolovl.

How old are you and what do you do for a living?

Thank you very much for the invitation. I am 53 years old and financially secure.  I prefer to let the media speculate about my wealth. But it is true that I am one of the richest people in Russia.  Incidentally, it's not true that I acquired my wealth illegally. Like others, I bought shares cheaply during the privatization of Russian state-owned companies and thus created the basis for my current real estate empire. Today, I know that money alone does not make you happy. Especially when you need the support of the Russian president to maintain your wealth. As a rich oligarch, you are his prisoner. But more on that later.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

I come from a respected Russian family from St. Petersburg and am traditionally a nationalist Russian. I love my fatherland. However, since I lived in the USA for several years. I am also a politically western-minded person. I am in favor of basic democratic values that safeguard the freedom and dignity of citizens. That is not the case in Russia. On the contrary, we have become a dictatorship with a new Czar at the top.

I have been living miserably in this environment for too long. That is why I have decided to change Russia. Now you want to know how? Okay. We are a group of oligarchs who will overthrow the Russian president in a few days. Just like Caesar was overthrown by his senators. Everything is prepared. Even the new government. It will put an end to the terrible war against Ukraine, and we will reach out to the USA for a new partnership.

What would I love the most about you?

I have no idea. Maybe you would admire me because I will risk everything I have achieved to lead Russia into a new, better world.  So I am a resistance fighter who is ready to sacrifice his life. Perhaps you would call me crazy. Even if my plan fails, at least I tried. That alone counts. So I am an idealist. And privately? I'm in love with a woman who means everything to me. I want to share my future with her. Unfortunately, Yulia Smirnoff  is the partner of the Russian president and the mother of his two sons. Therefore, you could say that I'm also an idiot, a Romeo who lost his mind for love. I hope the Czar is dead before he finds out.

What makes you laugh out loud?

To be honest, I have lost that spontaneous quality. I live in a world of constant surveillance and betrayal. Everything I do is controlled. I am rich but unfree. There is not much to laugh about.

No, there was one event. After an emergency helicopter landing in the mountains of northern Italy, Yulia secretly came to my room at night.  I was lying in a 200-year-old wooden bed.

She stood naked in the moonlit room, jumped on me with a mighty leap, the picture of the Virgin Mary fell from the wall and missed us both by a hair's breadth. At the same time the church bells rang out in the village. I burst out laughing. I had no way of knowing that this was perhaps also a warning from St. Mary.

What is your most treasured possession?

My dignity, my authenticity

Are you a loner or do you prefer to be surrounded by friends?

I have become a lone wolf. I'm cautious even with my friends. You never know who might turn the knife on you. Many people try to get in touch with me. My only friend is Yulia.

What is your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is that my plan will fail, even though the coup is perfectly prepared.

If you could change one physical thing about yourself, what would that be?

My deceased wife said in her last weeks: “Alexei, you tend to play with risk and overstep boundaries. Make sure you don't overstep the mark.” It's hard for me to take that to heart, because I'm actually also a player who has to take risks. Right now, it's all or nothing.

However, I do make a point of eating properly. That's why I maintain my ideal weight and go to the gym every day. Low carbohydrates and lots of exercise work wonders.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

I would pray to God that someone else would complete my plan and ask Him to forgive me for all my sins. But to be honest, I don't even want to know. If death comes, please make it quick and as unexpected as possible. My creator Jörg H. Trauboth has come up with something that I don't agree with at all. Shame on him! So read the story and you'll know what happens to me.

Once celebrated for her show-stopping pastries and irresistible desserts, former celebrity chef Laura Harris is now making headlines for a far darker reason.

Hattie wasn’t just a pillar of the community; she was Laura’s confidant and mentor. The shocking twist? Hattie had made recent changes to her will, bypassing next-of kin and leaving her entire fortune and historic estate to Laura.

The real murderer is always one step ahead, leaving taunting clues and threatening Laura to leave Texas—or face deadly consequences. With time not a luxury, Laura must untangle the web of deceit before the killer makes her the next victim.

A Hush at Midnight is available at Amazon.

Excerpt:

Stenburg, Texas – Friday evening

A killer sunset plunged toward the horizon, casting its tangerine glare on the Stenburg Estate’s green metal roof and aging bricks. Since her hasty arrival from the Los Angeles area last year, Laura Harris had sought out the renowned East Texas skyline for its towering thunderstorm clouds and the lemonade-pinks at twilight.

The colors gave her a sense of calm before the inaugural trip to see her elderly mentor and dearest pen pal, Hattie Stenburg. Laura last visited with her in California—over a decade ago.

As Laura skirted a large puddle in her Subaru and stopped along the shoulder of the roadway, she parked the car, turned off the engine, and exited the driver’s side. She breathed in air filled with pungent smells of wet pine needles and dampened leaves. Laura had passed through the April shower a few miles east of the Stenburg town limits sign. Leave it to the Stenburgs to live in a town named after themselves.

Snaggled grapevines across the road on Hattie’s property sat stoic and graying in long horizontal rows from the oil and gravel highway road to the classic red brick two-story at the top of the hill. The vines showed no signs of new growth even though T-posts held the outstretched limbs twisted within wire and sagging driplines. Gnarled stumps had been left behind from a time when the Stenburgs had added varietal grapes to their company’s wine processing vats prior to Warren Stenburg’s death nearly eight years ago—before Laura’s dad took over as the Texas corporation’s chief executive officer.

 About the Book

What if you found out the artifacts from the fairy tales you loved as a child were real and one of them just predicted your death? That’s the dilemma Scientist Ben Michaels faces when Siene Dower, descendant of the Brothers Grimm, tells him that Snow White’s Magic Mirror sent her to stop him from getting into the cab that crashed and burst into flame right before his eyes at the intersection at Penn Station, New York City. Does practical Dr. Michaels dismiss everything he knows about reality and science and follow the curious and beautiful woman who just saved his life?

The Mirror is available at Amazon.

Excerpt:

“Sit.” Siene motioned to the black sofa next to the door. She walked to the back bookshelf and pulled forward an old book with her forefinger. She skimmed the pages as she walked back to him. About halfway through the book she retrieved a fragile-looking, folded paper with timeworn brown edges.

She sat next to him. “Show me your palm.”

Ben held out his hand. “Why? Are you going to read it?”

“Do I look like a fortune teller?”

“You did predict the cab accident,” Ben replied.

She rolled her eyes and gently unfolded the paper. Carefully, she dropped three brown, shriveled ovals into his palm.

Ben’s brow furrowed. “What are these?”

“Beans.”

“I can see that.” He looked up. “Is this when I ask you why they were hidden in the book?”

“No, you’re supposed to guess.”

Ben lifted an eyebrow. “Do you really want to play games, Siene?”

She crossed her arms in front of her. “Actually, yes. You’re the hot-shot genius. I’m curious to see if that big brain of yours can think outside the . . .” She felt a wicked smile form on her lips “. . . outside the spit glands.”

He shot her an annoyed look and used his forefinger to move the beans around on his palm. They were shrunken but all the same size and shape. Kidney beans, he guessed. Very old kidney beans. He glanced at Siene. “Beans hidden in a book. Did you get them from a prom date instead of flowers and this is your way of telling me that you’re still thinking of the prom king?”

She saw amusement replace the annoyance on his face. Okay, maybe inside all the gray matter the man had a sense of humor. She’d try sparring with him later. Right now, she had to make a seemingly very obtuse point. “Did your mother ever read you fairy tales when you were a child?”

“Yes,” Ben replied, still holding the beans in his outstretched hand.

“Which ones?”

“The usual. Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, the Shoemaker and the Elves.”

“What about Jack and the Beanstalk?”

Ben glanced down at the beans in his hand and then back at Siene. “Of course, and I suppose you’re going to tell me these are magic beans.”

Skepticism lit his eyes and Siene knew he wasn’t quite there yet. “I know I’m asking a lot, but for a minute, just send all the Einstein stuff to the back of your gray matter and go with it.” His expression told her he thought she was nuts and she suspected ninety-nine percent of the world’s population would probably agree with him. “I guess laymen might say they are magic.”

“Laymen.” Ben paused before shooting her a probing stare. “People off their meds like you, you mean.”

She held up her finger. “You agreed to go with it.”

“No, I did not.”

“Let’s pretend you did. These beans are the last ones left.  It drives my brother, Reed, crazy that I keep them in a book.  He thinks it’s the first place a Taltoian would look.” She held the book up so he could see the title.

“Taltioan?”

“I’ll get there in a minute.” She lifted her chin. “Look at the book.”

White paper showed through the frayed corners of the cover and the embossed lettering worn low by the passing years made the words hard to read. He leaned closer and squinted. Tales by the Brothers Grimm. His head snapped up. “Is this an original edition?” He turned the book over and then back. “It looks very old.”

Siene nodded. “They are my great-great--maybe another great, maybe not, it really doesn’t matter at this point--Uncles Jacob and Wilhelm. The book has been passed down through the generations.”

Ben’s wide-eyed gaze flared. “You are crazy. You expect me to believe these are the magic beans they wrote about? That if you plant them, a stalk will grow as high as the clouds and if we climb it, we will meet a giant who has a goose that lays golden eggs?”

“Yes, and other things. A golden harp…”

Ben stood. “This has been an adventure to say the least, and I will admit you might have a very valuable book that could command millions, but you being related to the Brothers Grimm, “ he looked down at his hand, “And these are magic beans, I don’t think so.”

“Why not?”

He handed her back the book and held up fingers in a vee. “Two reasons. One, I suspect if there actually was a goose that laid golden eggs, some billionaire would own it and two, a giant, by sheer atomic weight and mass, cannot stand or live on a cloud.”

Siene shrugged. “Whether you believe me or not, it’s still true.”

“Which part?”

“All of it.” She slipped her hand under his. “I better take those back now.” She carefully placed the beans inside the paper and back into the book.

Ben remained still for several minutes as though processing the information he just heard. “It appears your uncles, if they truly are,  are not the only ones who can tell tall tales.”

She put the book back on the shelf. “They wrote the stories to protect the artifacts.”

“Artifacts. Like those in a museum?”

She looked at him and smiled. “No, the ones in my uncles’ stories.”

“Which stories?”
“All of them.”
